Rock and roll, like the blues and rockabilly styles that spawned it, requires nothing more than a handful of chords and a driving beat to get its point across. This may be the one constant in the now 50 year history of this mongrel genre: whenever the music becomes too slick and ambitious - artistically, theatrically, and commercially - someone always comes along to kick it back to the basics. In the case of punk rock, that kick was particularly rude and, its partisans would say, badly needed. Punk channeled that alienation into a style and sound that stripped rock back to the fundamentals but delivered them harder, faster, and louder than ever before.
